The new dawn of Britain's Nationalised Railway was in its early stages when Peppercorn-designed A1 Pacific 'W P Allen' rolled out of Doncaster Works in August 1948. With 'British Railways' emblazoned across its Apple Green liveried tender there was little doubt regarding its new ownership. This fabulous Golden Age model, fitted with DCC Sound and Smoke Unit, displays the loco in its 1948 condition when allocated to Kings Cross shed. Subsequent moves to Leeds, Grantham and ultimately Doncaster were to follow before withdrawal after only 15 years of service.
