The locomotives provided an ideal replacement to the Gresley P2s which had at this point all been rebuilt by Thompson, creating a lack in motive power for the Edinburgh - Aberdeen route. Due to this power they were amongst the last multi-cylinder express locomotives still in use on BRs network.
