The well regarded 'A Class' or L&YR Class 27 0-6-0 locomotives were one of the success stories of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, with 490 built and used across the north of England for over 70 years. With the prototype surviving well into the post nationalisation era and one surviving into preservation, this type of locomotive was a regular in areas around Bolton and the North West of England.
