BR's 'Derby Lightweights' were among the first multiple units to enter squadron service in the mid-1950s and became particularly associated with services in the Midlands and northern England. Their distinctive and stylish design featured large glass windows to the cabs, affording occupants an excellent view.
The Lightweight fleet included two single-car specimens. These rather lovely oddballs worked initially on the Banbury – Buckingham route and incorporated a cab at each end. Built almost certainly from a Westdale kit, this example has been well finished and runs well, driving on both axles of one bogie, albeit slightly noisily.
The model has a full interior and the destination blinds have been fitted to reflect one of the original routes on which the two railcars ran.
