This particular Black 5 comes finished as it is currently preserved: Late BR Lined livery, with a welded tender, the running number '45231' and name 'The Sherwood Forester'
New to the LMS 08/1936 with Armstrong Whitworth works number 1286. 45231 was initially allocated to Carlisle Upperby (12B). When under BR where it was allocated to Patricroft (10C) where it remained for around 6 years. A re-allocation to Northampton (2E) at the beginning of October 1954 was then followed by spells at Aston (3D), Stoke (5D), Aston (21D), Rugby (2A), Chester (6A), Speke Junction (8C) and Carnforth (10A) where it was withdrawn. From here 45231 was bought from BR by Michael Stephenson and was kept at Carnforth Steamtown museum. From here the locomotive moved to the Great Central Railway in 1973, followed by a brief spell at the Nene Valley Railway from 1989 - 1993. 45231 moved back to the GCR after being bought by the railway in 1996 and received “The Sherwood Forester” nameplates. In 2001 Bert Hitchen bought 45231 and returned it to mainline standards working for Steam Dreams tours. Bert passed away in 2015 and 45231 was purchased by Jeremy Hosking and now forms part of the Locomotive Services Limited fleet of heritage steam locomotives.
