D1038's short but distinguished service life started and finished at Laira (1962-73) with stints at Old Oak Common, Cardiff, Landore and Bristol in the intervening years. Heljan's superb rendition of the 'Western' features a smooth and powerful mechanism with quadruple working roof fans.
