Built from cast metal and brass components, the model is an excellent runner and has been lightly weathered.
Introduced from 1889 by John Aspinall, the L&YR class 5s were designed for local passenger work and were built at the L&YR's Horwich Locomotive Works. Unusually for tank engines, they were fitted with water scoops. The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1961, with class pioneer no. 1008 preserved for the National Collection. This example here, no. 10693, has been fitted with a later Hughes' Belpaire superheated boiler.
