Factory built and in excellent overall condition, this example of the famous 'Lion' is un-steamed from the factory, and air tested only in-house, proving to be a very free running model.
Built in 1838 to haul freight traffic on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 'Lion' would later go on to become a film star, starring in the 1953 Ealing Comedy 'The Titfield Thunderbolt'. 'Lion' was later sold to become a pumping engine after the formation of the LNWR, a move which would save the locomotive for preservation having been re-discovered in 1923 and then saved by members of the Liverpool Engineering Society in 1928. The locomotive was then renovated by Crewe Works and has been overhauled many times since; it has featured at many commemorative railway events.
